Flagship Climate-Resilient Olive Orchard Demonstration Project — Upper Dir

WADDAN's flagship Climate-Resilient Olive Orchard Demonstration Project in Upper Dir promotes climate-smart and sustainable agriculture while supporting improved agricultural practices, livelihood opportunities, and resilience among farming communities.

Supported through an in-kind sponsorship by Dr. Khair Muhammad Kakar, Managing Director of the Pakistan Oilseed Department, who also provided technical oversight through site visits. Olive cultivation was identified as a model crop: low water demand, tolerant of marginal and sloped terrain. Designed as a working demonstration site with farmer training on irrigation, pruning, IPM, soil testing, kitchen gardening, Farmers' Associations, and farmer exchange programmes.

Integrated Model Demonstration Plot — Bakarabad, Lower Chitral

A single site combining three components:

  • Afforestation — tree cover to stabilize soil and support watershed regulation.
  • Agriculture — staple and fodder crops modelling improved row-cropping and soil management.
  • Horticulture — fruit and orchard plantation for diversified, higher-value cropping.
